Frequently Asked Questions
How much does training cost?
Robbie’s instruction rate is $75/hour. Single engine training aircraft rentals typically run between $150-$200 per hour. The number of hours of training it will take you to earn your certificate or rating varies based on many factors that Robbie can discuss with you. These days, earning a private pilot certificate takes on average around 60 flight hours and $15-20k total.
Do you have a recommended Ground School?
I recommend and have partnered with Gold Seal ground school as I like the way their online ground school is presented as well as interactive features. Students who take the time to study and prepare at home progress faster through training and can spend more time in the air on flight training days. While not required, if you would like to utilize Gold Seal ground school, you can do so here.
How often should I train?
As often as possible! You should plan to fly AT LEAST once per week. When flying any less than this students often will not remember all they have learned from one lesson to the next requiring more lessons and flying hours to complete their training. Scheduling 2 to 3 lessons per week is ideal, knowing occasionally a lesson may have to be cancelled for weather conditions (luckily in the Los Angeles area this doesn’t happen frequently).
How long is a typical lesson?
I like to schedule lessons in 3 hour blocks. This gives us time to brief the lesson before flying, pre-flight the airplane, fly for 1.5-2 hours and debrief afterwards. Some lessons may be longer or shorter based on what is being practiced during that session. For example, cross-country training flights will be longer than the average lesson
What are the requirements to begin flight training?
You will need to be a US citizen or get TSA clearance in order to begin training. You will also need a medical certificate before you can fly solo. I can help you through the steps for both of these items. Age wise, solo flight is permitted at 16 years of age and you can get your private pilot certificate at 17.
