More Than Just a Joyride

A Discovery Flight is the official first step toward becoming a pilot. Unlike a scenic tour where you sit in the back, you sit in the pilot’s seat.

As your independent instructor, I guide you through every step of the process. You’ll see Los Angeles from a perspective few ever get to witness—while learning the fundamentals of aerodynamics and aircraft control.

  • Hands-On Flying: You will control the aircraft for approximately 80% of the flight.

  • Loggable Time: This flight counts officially toward your Private Pilot Certificate requirements.

  • No Pressure: It’s the perfect way to see if flight training is right for you, with no long-term commitment required.

The Experience: What to Expect

Phase 1: Pre-Flight Briefing (30 Mins)

We meet at the airport office for a safety briefing. I’ll walk you through the aircraft’s systems, how the flight controls work, and what we’ll be doing in the air. You will help me inspect the airplane (the “preflight”) just like a real pilot.

Phase 2: The Flight (45 Mins)

We taxi to the runway, take off, and climb out over the city. Once we are at a safe altitude, I hand the controls to you. You’ll learn how to climb, descend, and turn.

Phase 3: Debrief & Logbook (15 Mins)

After a smooth landing, we’ll taxi back and debrief. I will answer any questions you have about training costs, medical certificates, and timelines. If you decide to pursue your license, I’ll sign your very first Logbook entry—proof that you are officially a student pilot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this safe?

Yes. You will be flying with a commercially rated, FAA-Certified Flight Instructor in a meticulously maintained aircraft. The aircraft has dual controls, meaning I can take over at any instant if needed.

Can I bring a guest?

Yes! You can bring one passenger to sit in the back seat to take photos and enjoy the view. Please let me know in advance for weight and balance calculations.

What if I get motion sick?

It happens! We can keep the flight smooth and short if you aren’t feeling well. We also have air vents and strategies to keep you comfortable. Most people are too focused on flying to feel sick.

What do I need to bring?

A government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or Passport) and sunglasses. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops or heels).
