A practical path to flying when an FAA medical is an obstacle.
For eligible students, Sport Pilot training can provide a path to pilot certification using a current and valid U.S. driver's license as medical qualification for daytime operations instead of an FAA medical certificate.

Driver-license medical pathway
20-hour FAA minimum for airplanes
One-on-one Part 61 training
Expanded aircraft options under MOSAIC
Quick answer
Eligible students can pursue Sport Pilot training in Los Angeles and may use a current and valid U.S. driver's license as medical qualification for applicable daytime sport-pilot operations. FAA medical-history restrictions and the rule against flying with a known unsafe medical condition still apply, so eligibility should be reviewed before committing to a plan.
A medical pathway worth evaluating carefully
Sport Pilot can be an excellent option for someone who does not need the broader privileges of a Private Pilot certificate and is eligible to use a current and valid U.S. driver's license instead of an FAA medical certificate for daytime sport-pilot operations.
The driver's-license pathway is not a way around every medical issue. It is unavailable when any of these conditions applies:
- Your most recent FAA medical application was denied
- Your most recently issued medical certificate was suspended or revoked
- Your most recent Special Issuance authorization was withdrawn
- You know or have reason to know of a medical condition that would make the operation unsafe
What airplane training requires
For airplane single-engine privileges, the FAA minimum is 20 hours: at least 15 hours of flight training and 5 hours of solo training, including cross-country experience, takeoffs and landings, and practical-test preparation. Minimum time is not a promise of completion; training continues until the required knowledge and proficiency are demonstrated.
- Aircraft control, takeoffs, landings, stalls, and emergency procedures
- Navigation, weather, airspace, radio communication, and risk management
- Solo preparation and required logbook endorsements
- Cross-country planning and FAA practical-test preparation
Useful privileges with clear limits
MOSAIC expanded the airplanes that may qualify under the Sport Pilot rules, including certain four-seat airplanes that meet the regulation's performance and design limits. A Sport Pilot may still carry no more than one passenger and must follow the certificate's operating limits and any required aircraft, airspace, or equipment endorsements.
A driver's-license-only qualification is best understood as a daytime pathway. Night privileges require additional training and an instructor endorsement plus an FAA medical certificate or BasicMed qualification.
How Sport Pilot training works at Van Nuys
Training follows a structured Part 61 progression rather than trying to combine every requirement at once:
- Build aircraft control and learn local Van Nuys procedures
- Prepare for supervised solo flight and the required endorsements
- Add cross-country planning, navigation, and decision-making
- Complete knowledge-test preparation and practical-test readiness work
Van Nuys provides frequent practice with tower communication and busy-airspace decision-making, while nearby practice areas support fundamental maneuver work.
Aircraft eligibility and availability must be confirmed for the privileges being pursued. Robbie will review the intended aircraft, medical pathway, and operating goals before recommending Sport Pilot rather than Private Pilot training.

Know before you schedule.
Can I become a Sport Pilot if I cannot get an FAA medical?
Possibly. If you are otherwise eligible, a current and valid U.S. driver's license may serve as your medical qualification for daytime sport-pilot operations. A denial on your most recent FAA medical application, suspension or revocation of your most recently issued medical, withdrawal of your most recent Special Issuance, or a condition that makes flying unsafe can prevent use of this pathway, so your history should be reviewed before training is planned.
Can I fly at night using only my driver's license?
No. Night Sport Pilot privileges require specified night training and an instructor endorsement, plus an FAA medical certificate or BasicMed qualification.
How many hours does a Sport Pilot certificate require?
For airplane single-engine privileges, the FAA minimum is 20 hours, including at least 15 hours with an instructor and 5 hours of solo training. Many students need additional time to reach consistent proficiency.
Can a Sport Pilot fly a four-seat airplane?
An airplane may have up to four seats if it otherwise meets the performance and design requirements of 14 CFR § 61.316, but a Sport Pilot remains limited to carrying no more than one passenger.
